Macon-Bibb County commissioners voted 5-4 Tuesday night to send the consolidated government’s first full budget back to committee for more discussion.
The decision came after a long line of speakers who sought restored funding for The Medical Center of Central Georgia and the Macon Transit Authority’s paratransit service.
Their funding was cut earlier from the $158.7 million general fund budget in order to fund museums, which Mayor Robert Reichert’s original proposal had axed.
“This is a budget that I think it’s fair to say that nobody’s happy with,” Reichert said at a 5 p.m. pre-commission meeting. The mayor said virtually everyone would like to see changes to the budget, which passed the Operations & Finance Committee.
Reichert urged commissioners to pass the budget Tuesday night, to avoid rehashing previous wrangles and avoid making funding decisions on a tight deadline. A budget must be in place by the June 30 end of the fiscal year.
