The outgoing chair at the Chatham-Savannah Authority for the Homeless is challenging Chatham County officials and the business community to become more involved in what he calls a new homeless authority.
Larry Lee, who leaves the post on Monday, thanked the city of Savannah for financial help and leadership “in underwriting the enormous work that will be required to construct what I hope will be a new approach to dealing with homelessness.”
But, he said, county officials need to reconnect with the authority’s efforts, noting that only one of four county appointments to the board are now serving.
“In addition to leadership, we also ask the county to become financial partners with the city in underwriting the costs of our efforts.”
Business leaders also are needed “at our table,” Lee said. “Unless we have the support and guidance of all segments of our society, we will not achieve our maximum effectiveness.”
