The Georgia Environmental Protection Division responded Friday to a report of a chemical spill at King America Finishing in Screven County.
An anonymous caller reported the spill, saying a former employee of the textile processor told her the chemical Pyrozol had been dumped in the Ogeechee River.
Environmental engineer Christopher Beranek investigated the complaint. KAF staffers told him the company had an incident on Sept. 26 in which a forklift punctured two 220-gallon containers of Pyrozol, a chemical used in the company’s flame retardant line.
About 170 gallons of the chemical spilled on the concrete floor of the warehouse. The material was cleaned up using the absorbent clay material Oil-Dri and placed in plastic drums awaiting disposal.
“They said it was non-hazardous, so it will probably go to the local landfill,” Beranek said.
