Even though spring got a late start, local peach farmers aren’t in the pits.

Tim Bledsoe opened one of his two family-run peach stands on Tuesday, marking the beginning of the sweet fruit’s season in Aiken. The Whiskey Road stand, run by his son Dan, had baskets of juicy, light red and yellow peaches lining the tables ready for consumption on Tuesday morning.

Jackson’s Peaches, which sits on the corner of Highway 19 and Rutland Drive, opened on Monday. Catherine Smith, who works the peach stand, said they sold out of peaches on opening day. On Tuesday afternoon at about 5 p.m., vehicles were circling the stand as people rushed to get a few peaches on their way home from work.

“It’s here, and I know everyone is excited,” Smith said about peach season.

Bledsoe said that peaches are a sign of the start to the hottest season of the year.

“When school’s out and peaches are in, it must be summer,” Bledsoe said.
