Today, I am excited to announce my candidacy to become the next Governor of Georgia. I am running for Governor because I believe in Georgia at its best.
In my years in the State Senate, I have fought to grow the middle class and help small businesses; to support public schools and make higher education affordable; and to reform our ethics laws. It is what I will continue to do as your Governor.
Georgia at its best invests in education – we don’t cut one billion dollars from our public school classrooms or restrict the HOPE Scholarship to shortchange rural Georgia.
My wife Kate is a teacher at our local high school. My son Henry is in the first grade and our youngest son Thomas starts kindergarten next year. Education is personal for us, just like it is for your family.
That’s why, as a State Senator, I travelled across the State and listened to hundreds of parents and educators. What I heard is that our education system is on the brink. We have to take action now, or we will sacrifice too much of our future.
Georgia at its best makes sure the economy works for middle class families. In the State Senate, I have fought to protect technical education, which trains our workforce and helps people get high paying jobs. And I’ve fought to make sure that our small businesses get the same benefits that big companies do.
Georgia at its best has an honest government that works for everyone, not just big campaign donors or well-placed friends. In the Senate, I’ve fought for increased transparency and better enforcement of the ethics laws that are on the books. I also authored legislation calling for an Independent Redistricting Commission because we need to do all we can to improve public faith in the electoral process, not encourage partisan gridlock.
I love Georgia. For nine generations, my family has farmed Georgia soil, built businesses here, taught Sunday school and done what we can to improve the lives of our neighbors.
I’m proud to come from a tradition of service. My great-grandmother Lillian was born in the 1800s and spent her life as a nurse in rural Georgia. And then she turned 70 in the Peace Corps. I followed that same sense of mission and spent two years in Africa – working in schools where the families carried their water from the river, and built their houses out of sticks and mud.
If I’ve learned anything in my years of service, including my time working with Democrats and Republicans in the State Senate, it is that we can come together to solve problems and succeed.
That’s Georgia at its best.
