In anticipation of a new outlet mall, Pooler officials recently took a trip to Jacksonville, Fla., to see what might be in store for their city.
Three council members and five other officials rented a van on July 26 and drove more than 130 miles to St. Johns Town Center, an upscale outdoor mall southeast of downtown in the city’s Southside area at the intersection of Interstate 295, which encircles the city, and Butler Boulevard, a major east-west artery.
The St. Johns location resembles that of a planned outlet mall in Pooler, which will be on 173 acres in the southwest quadrant of Interstate 95 and Pooler Parkway behind Sam’s Club. Construction on the $220 million Pooler project began last month.
Atlanta-based Ben Carter Enterprises is the developer of both malls, which factored into officials’ decision to visit the Jacksonville facility, in addition to its proximity. They wanted to view the mall’s design first-hand, evaluate accessibility and observe traffic.
