Three Athens-Clarke County commissioners talked of revisiting the scope of the Classic Center’s proposed expansion at the commission’s agenda-setting meeting Thursday, even as the local government awaits proposals for bonds on the full project.

The three commissioners — Allison Wright, Jerry NeSmith and Jared Bailey — all voted against the project earlier this month. This upcoming vote, slated for the Oct. 1 meeting of the mayor and commission, would be on whether to accept any proposals for bond funding, including interest rates. Athens-Clarke County would back the $5.4 million in debt, or whatever the final bond may be, in the hopes of lower interest rates, but the Classic Center Authority would foot the bill.

The project includes $3.1 million to finish the Classic Center parking deck with 100 additional spaces, add another 100 surface lot spaces, and purchase vans and update parking control equipment. Another $2.2 million would be used for arena-style removable seating to be used in the exhibit hall to allow sporting events, family shows and conventions, and equipment to allow for a temporary ice rink. The rest would be for incidental fees, such as outside counsel.
