ATLANTA | When using investigative technology, state law enforcement agencies rely on set policy guidelines and transparency to avoid the public reaction federal officials are getting, the head of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said Wednesday.

GBI Director Vernon Keenan told members of the Atlanta Press Club during a panel discussion on privacy that those safeguards protect the public and the integrity of the agency.

“I don’t want us doing anything that we’re not willing to stand up and say, ‘This is what we are doing,’ ” he said. “One of the reasons why the Open Records Act is so important in this state is that it keeps everyone accountable, including us.”

While information about undercover investigations won’t be revealed until after they are complete, the eventual disclosure keeps the agency honest, he said.
