Gwinnett Daily Post | POLITICAL NOTEBOOK: Collins hopes to continue father’s service

Congressional candidate Mike Collins stopped by the Daily Post this week, part of his effort to visit all of the media in the 25 counties of the 10th District.

Collins is one of six Republicans who have announced they are vying the seat currently held by U.S. Rep. Paul Broun, of Athens, who is campaigning for the U.S. Senate in 2014.

When asked how he differs from his father Mac Collins, who represented Georgia in Congress from 1993 until 2005, Collins joked that the two have different boot sizes.

“The apple didn’t fall far from the tree. In fact, it probably fell under the roots,” Collins said. “I admire my dad. I always have.”

The father of three who owns a trucking business in his native Butts County describes himself as a Constitutionalist. And he said his business experience is what sets him apart in a diverse field, which includes Dacula state Rep. Donna Sheldon.

“You want to know how to fix this country? It’s jobs,” Collins said. “We’ve got a problem with a government that wants to be the end-all, be-all for the citizens and businesses. … They are boxing business in.”
