LAWRENCEVILLE — One of Gwinnett’s largest greenways will soon stretch longer, after commissioners approved work this week.
The $2.2 million project will another three-quarters of a mile to the Ivy Creek Greenway, a trail near the Mall of Georgia. Construction, performed by Astra Group, is expected to be complete by the end of the year.
The new section of the 12-foot wide asphalt trail, which will include, with three wood boardwalks, a 270-foot cable bridge, an overlook, an overlook platform and restrooms, will extend the trail to 4.4 miles.
It connects to a recently completed nature trail through the F. Wayne Hill Water Resources site, allowing people who visit the Gwinnett Environmental and Heritage Center to enjoy the trail, officials said. In the future, the trail is expected to extend to a total of seven miles, connecting to a section at George Pierce Park.
“Greenways are an important extension of our park system and provide a chance for individuals and families to focus on fitness in a natural setting,” Commissioner Jace Brooks said in a press release.
