Georgia’s first Korean candidate for Senate says common sense makes him qualified | jacksonville.com

ATLANTA | Republican Senate candidate Eugene Yu told Morris News Tuesday he is confident his campaign will have broad appeal.

Yu has sold his Augusta business and intends to campaign full-time in the 11 months until the primary. His campaign already has a staff of seven, and he has been crisscrossing the state for weeks despite waiting until Friday to formally announce his candidacy the National Federation of Republican Women’s conference in Atlanta.

Although unknown to political observers, Yu is known among the Asian community across Georgia and across the country after serving as national president of a federation of Korean-American organizations. To tap into those connections he already has fund-raisers planned in Washington, Chicago and a half-dozen other cities.

He said he developed his fund-raising and other political skills in the federation.

“To me, politics is not rocket science. When people ask me about my qualifications, it’s common sense,” he said.
