Georgia taking over water supply test project – Atlanta Business Chronicle

The state is taking over a $5.1 million demonstration project that eventually could lead to a new water supply option for drought-prone metro Atlanta.

The Southwest Georgia Regional Commission, formally notified the Georgia Environmental Finance Authority in a letter dated May 14 that it wishes to withdraw from the planned test of a technology known as aquifer storage and recovery.

“It became obvious that the selected demonstration project is crucial to our region but also has importance outside our region,” said Robert McDaniel, the commission’s executive director.

“Upon reflection of this importance, we believe the demonstration project should proceed as a state of Georgia project.”

The Georgia Board of Natural Resources signed off early this month on a proposal to pump water out of the shallow Floridan (CQ) aquifer at a state-owned wildlife management area in Baker County, Ga., southwest of Albany, and transfer it into two much deeper aquifers for storage.
