Does Price Out of Senate Race mean Handel will be in?
On Friday, Congressman Tom Price announced he won’t run for the Senate seat being vacated by Senator Saxby Chambliss.
Speculation naturally turned to whether Karen Handel will announce shortly. RollCall has the decision announcement timetable.
“I think it’s virtually guaranteed that Karen Handel is going to be announcing in the near future,” Georgia-based GOP consultant Joel McElhannon said.
A spokesman for Handel said it was unlikely she would announce her intentions at or before the state Republican convention on the weekend of May 18. In a statement released after Price’s announcement, Handel remained coy about her intentions.
“I am honored that so many people from across Georgia continue to urge me to run for US Senate, and I will let everyone know my decision in the very near future,” Handel said.

RollCall thinks she’s going to declare for Congress in the 11th District, to join Bob Barr, Ed Lindsey, and Barry Loudermilk in what will be a raucous Republican Primary. From RollCall:
Tricia Pridemore, a businesswoman and former official in Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal’s administration, will announce on Monday that she will run for the 11th District, according to a source close to her campaign.
Sheldon Adelson SuperPAC to call Georgia Home
According to the Political Moneyline Blog, a big fat sack of Sheldon Adelson’s dirty casino money may be calling home, though it’s not clear whether it will be deployed in the Georgia Senate race.
Sheldon Adelson (chairman and CEO, Las Vegas Sands Corp., Nevada), one of the wealthiest men in America, may be putting in place the structure for spending millions of dollars in independent expenditures in the 2014 elections. A new filing indicates money has moved from one of his 2012 super PACs to a new non-profit corporation in another state.
During 2011-2012 Adelson and his wife and companies contributed over $90 million to various committees. One of his vehicles was Independence Virginia PAC, a super PAC, spent $4,921,410 against U.S. Senate candidate Tim Kaine (D-Va.). Adelson’s Las Vegas Sands Corporation contributed $4 million to the super PAC.
Independence Virginia PAC, whose treasurer was Paul Bennecke, filed a terminationreport on Friday that showed it paid Jenson Strategic Partners of Atlanta, Georgia, $10,000 on 3/20, and transferred the $41,706 in remaining funds on 4/30 to Rise and Shine America Inc., a non-profit organization, in Johns Creek, Georgia.
The organizer and registered agent for Jenson Strategic Partners is Paul Bennecke. Bennecke was the political director for State Senator Sonny Perdue’s successful race for Governor in Georgia. The limited liability company was formed in 2013.
Rise and Shine America Inc. has a registered agent listed as Douglas Chalmers Jr, of Johns Creek, Ga. The chief executive officer is listed as Harry “Chip” Lake III of Atlanta, Ga. Chalmers, a Republican, of Political Law Group, specializes in federal and state political law and tax-exempt organizations. He previously was at McKenna, Long & Aldridge LLP. He also held an appointed Board position under Gov. Sonny Perdue. Another lawyer at the firm, Rebecca Sullivan, served as Executive Counsel to Gov. Sonny Perdue.
And seriously, who am I kidding? I’d sell out for just one small paper sack full of bills. As long as they’re clean and the denomination is correct. Think Benjamins.
Chatham County Homeowners, Brace Yourselves
The Chatham County Commission is expected to consider a millage rate increase when it meets Monday for a public hearing to discuss its Fiscal Year 2014 budget.
Sheriff Al St Lawrence has already recommended an additional 94 positions at a yearly cost of about $7.4 million, the minimal amount he said is needed to safely open the new housing units and move inmates from overcrowded cells.
The budget hearing is scheduled for 10 a.m. at the Old Courthouse Building. Lawerence is scheduled to give a presentation regarding the operation and staffing of the expanded jail.
Good Golly, Miss Molly: GDOT to buy Little Richard’s home

The Georgia Department of Transportation has reached a deal to buy the childhood home of Little Richard Penniman and turn it into a community history center in the Pleasant Hill neighborhood, as state officials have promised.
Peter Givens from the Pleasant Hill Neighborhood Improvement Group made the announcement Friday afternoon at Williams Elementary School.
Beyond Little Richard’s house, the plan calls for moving 25 more houses to now-vacant lots, allowing half a dozen owner-occupants to sell out or move back into fully renovated houses, at state expense. The remaining houses, all rentals, will also be renovated, with some assistance going to renters, according to state officials.
Streets for several blocks around the interstate are to get new asphalt, sidewalks, landscaping and lighting; and the current chain-link fence will be replaced with a solid buffer. The pedestrian bridge over the highway is to be rebuilt.
That last bit sounds a little tutti-frutti.
Duck, Duck, Goofy
Larry and Bonnie Epstein of east Cobb have kept pet ducks in their yard since they moved into their neighborhood in 1985.
But a complaint attracted the county’s code enforcement department. County residents must have 2 acres to have poultry unless they are given a variance.
Bonnie Epstein made a variance request to the Board of Zoning Appeals on Wednesday, but the board denied it.
Bonnie Epstein also submitted letters of support for her ducks from her adjacent neighbors.
Jill Flamm, president of the East Cobb Civic Association, asked the board to deny the request.
“The ECCA recommends denial of this application as there is no hardship as dictated by the code,” Flamm said.
Epstein said the ducks are used for her husband’s therapy. Since her husband suffered a car accident years ago that prompted multiple back and neck surgeries, it left him reliant on pain medication, she said.
“One of the major side effects of the medication is depression,” Bonnie Epstein said. “Caring for these ducks gives him an avenue of motivation that helps overcome the depression. Regardless of how much pain he may be in on a given day or how he feels, he is enthusiastic about going to care for his animals.”
Seriously, if you move into a pre-existing situation and then go to court over it, you’re a moron and the court system shouldn’t reward you by allowing you to impose your will on your new neighbors.
