Bob Barr elected to head world’s largest college fraternity

Steve Forbes Highlights Weekend Event

Bob Barr, former Congressman and currently a candidate to return to the U.S. House of Representatives from Georgia’s 11^th District, on Saturday was elected to serve a two-year term as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Tau Kappa Epsilon (TKE) Fraternity International.  TKE is the world’s largest fraternity, with 281 active collegiate chapters and colonies operating throughout the United States and Canada, and 11,391 undergraduates.  The Fraternity was formed in 1899 and is headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana, and has as a major focus for its charitable work raising money for St. Jude Children’s Hospital in Memphis, TN.

Prominent TKE alumni include former President Ronald Reagan, Steve Forbes, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, Elvis Presley, and many others.In his introduction of Barr at Saturday’s inaugural banquet held in Washington, DC, Forbes noted Barr’s career highlights as the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia, a post to which he was appointed by Ronald Reagan; and his service in the U.S. House from 1995 to 2003, during which time he worked to balance the budget, trim government spending and regulations, and protect the privacy rights of the citizens.

In his acceptance speech, Barr stressed the need to focus on the challenges facing higher education, including those from on-line learning and non-traditional schools, while continuing to provide the valuable socializing skills that long have been an important part of the fraternity experience for young men of all backgrounds.”

Barr also noted that the biennial TKE Conclave is a great celebration of brotherhood, where Tekes from all over the world come together for three days to select the leadership of the Fraternity, vote on changes to the governing rules and policies, recognize the best and brightest Tekes and TKE Chapters, participate in intense leadership development, and build friendships.

Barr became a Teke while earning his B.A. degree in International Relations at the University of Southern California, where he was initiated into the Beta Sigma Chapter.
