MAY 20—Here’s one of the most significant nomination days of all. This initial primary will help to determine whether Georgia Republicans keep the seat of retiring Sen. Saxby Chambliss or risk a loss to Democrat Michelle Nunn—the daughter of longtime senator Sam Nunn—in November. With no one from the large GOP field likely to win a majority, the top two finishers will advance to a July 22 runoff. Republican oddsmakers are surely hoping the final runoff pairing consists of names other than U.S. Reps. Paul Broun and Phil Gingrey, especially the former. Both Broun and Gingrey have a tendency to make controversial statements that have proved costly for Republicans in the last couple cycles.
