Dunagan takes oath as Gainesville’s 1st elected mayor

In front of a packed house at the Gainesville Justice Center, Danny Dunagan took the oath of office Friday as mayor of Gainesville.

“This is my third time (being sworn in) so I felt semi-comfortable,” said Dunagan, a former councilman. “I’m elected mayor this time, so I was just thinking about the future. Looking forward.”

This was the first year city voters could directly elect the mayor. Previously, the job rotated among sitting council members every two years, with a council member serving as mayor while representing a ward.

A 2009 voter referendum set up an at-large mayoral post and added an additional person to the council for a total of six members.
