Time is running short for Chatham County to compile a list of projects that will convince voters to support a six-year extension of the special purpose local option sales tax.

The list has to be adopted by Sept. 5 to hold the tax referendum in November, ahead of the expiration of the tax in the fall of 2014.

As the deadline nears, the extensive wish lists submitted by Savannah and seven other municipalities have yet to be whittled down to an amount reflecting the $370 million the 1-percent sales tax is projected to collect.

County Commission Chairman Al Scott said he intends to meet with city leaders during the next two weeks to negotiate a final list that ultimately will be decided by the county. Scott said he plans to have the list completed in time for the commission to adopt it during its Aug. 23 meeting.
