County chairman, Savannah mayor push SPLOST at NAACP meeting | savannahnow.com

Savannah Mayor Edna Jackson and Chatham County Commission Chairman Al Scott touted the special purpose local option sales tax Sunday during an NAACP meeting at St. John Baptist Church on Hartridge Street.

Voters head to the polls Nov. 5 to decide whether to continue the 1-percent sales tax to fund infrastructure improvements and other special projects as an alternative to increases in property taxes.

“Here is a program where you can have people doing the things they want to see happen, and it doesn’t just put the burden on the residents paying the home taxes, but it makes all of us pay just a little,” Jackson told the crowd of about 60 gathered in the church.

Included in the audience were past and current members of Savannah City Council, the county commission, the school board, state Sen. Lester Jackson and former Savannah Mayor Floyd Adams Jr.

The mayor told those in attendance SPLOST funds have allowed the city to construct fire stations, police stations and build other infrastructure.
