Councilwoman pleads not guilty to embezzlement – Atlanta Business Chronicle

A Clarkston city councilwoman has pleaded not guilty to charges she embezzled money from a nonprofit community center she helped run.

A federal grand jury last week indicted Joan Swaney, accusing her of embezzling $50,000 from the Clarkston Community Center, reports Atlanta Business Chronicle broadcast partner WXIA-TV. The indictment said Swaney forged the signature of the facility’s director on checks and deposited them into her own account.

The Clarkston Community Center provides recreation, education and other programs in Clarkston, WXIA said.

Swaney pleaded not guilty late Friday and was released by a federal judge on a signature bond.
