Savannah officials are considering ways to regulate the use of motorized carts and low-speed vehicles on downtown streets as their presence becomes more common.

There is currently only one tour and shuttle business downtown that operates the carts and the speed-limited, open-air vehicles, but the number is expected to multiply, said Vaughnette Goode-Walker, chairman of the Tourism Advisory Committee.

Mainly due to safety concerns, the committee held a special called meeting Tuesday morning to discuss potential regulations they could implement to make the modes of transportation safer.

Concerns expressed by the 13-member committee, as well as residents and business owners in attendance, included drivers’ bad behavior, having too many vehicles crowding downtown’s streets and the visual impact to the Downtown Historic District.
