Snellville City Manager Butch Sanders took the stand Tuesday in the city’s mayor vs. council case, admitting to lying on his resume.

Sanders, who is a defendant in the suit filed by Mayor Kelly Kautz after the council approved a new employment contract with him over her objections, was questioned about claims that he had received a bachelor’s degree in political science and economics and a master’s in public administration, both from the University of Georgia.

While Sanders’ attorneys objected that the issues were not relevant to the case, Kautz’s attorneys pointed to college transcripts that showed Sanders did not take economics classes at UGA and that he never received his master’s degree.

Sanders said he believed that he had received the master’s degree and pointed out that all the requirements had been fulfilled, adding that he intends to reach out to the university to investigate.

“That was a terrible personal mistake, and I apologize for that,” he said of the false claims of the economics degree, as well as previous erroneous claims that he had attended the University of Southern California on a football scholarship, as stated on his resume when he applied to become city manager of Dalton earlier in his career.
