A proposed sales tax referendum — scheduled for a November ballot if differences between county officials and the election board can be resolved — would not pass if the election was held now, says Chatham County Commission Chairman Al Scott.
The chairman’s comments were made during an interview last Friday amid rising questions and concerns from a number of officials about how the process for a special purpose local option sales tax — SPLOST — has been handled.
And that was before this week’s looming showdown between the county government and county Board of Elections over who has control of the Nov. 5 election ballot.
Joseph Steffen, chairman of the elections board, was scheduled to talk Wednesday afternoon with city attorney Brooks Stillwell to see whether they could make headway on the matter.
Steffen said Tuesday’s response from County Attorney Jon Hart regarding the repurposing of previous SPLOST money that would grant taxpayers a one-time millage rollback satisfied him. He is also pleased with the commission’s decision to ratify the signed intergovernmental agreement Friday.
That leaves the issue of the county’s resolution calling for the election following the signing of the agreement as the only other major concern that Steffen wants to see resolved.
He wants the commission to take a re-vote on the resolution Friday. It’s a procedural matter and not a challenge to the county’s authority, he said.
