ATLANTA — Georgia Democrats are expecting an announcement Thursday that Jason Carter will make a run for Governor.

Carter has been a state senator representing Decatur for three years. He instantly became a political star in part because he is a grandson of former president Jimmy Carter. Carter would become the favorite to win the Democratic nomination next year. But he also faces long odds.

In the last state election in 2010, every Democrat running a statewide race in Georgia lost. Roy Barnes, a former Governor, got clobbered by now Governor Nathan Deal. Deal will run for re-election next year– but has two Republican primary challengers.

Carter would be among many politicians vying for voters attention in the next year. Three members of congress and a former secretary of state are among those hoping to take the US Senate seat being vacated by Saxby Chambliss.
