Board votes to consolidate Ranger voting precinct – : Local

The Gordon County Board of Election unanimously voted to merge Ranger’s voting precinct into Oakman, Fairmount and Red Bud for all elections other than City of Ranger elections.

Shea Hicks, chairman of the board, placed the notices in more places than she was legally required, so people would be informed about the merger, but according to the board of elections, no one from the community has shown opposition.

With no residents showing opposition, and no petition from the community to halt the decision, the board voted to approve the merger on Tuesday, Dec. 17. The merger could save the taxpayers $2,500 each year there are county elections, according to the board of elections.

“It makes good sense,” Carolyn Fuller said, who is the appointed Democratic board member.

The Ranger voters will be divided based on where the voter lives. The change in distance for voters from the precincts will be the same, maybe shorter, with one exception, according to the board.

Voters along Knight Bottom Road will have the furthest trip. Those voters will have to drive to the Fairmount Community Center, which is approximately an 8-½ mile drive.

The voters that live on Red Bud Road will be moving to the Red Bud voting precinct, Pleasant Valley Baptist Church, those voters will only have to drive a few miles to their voting precinct. When they voted at Ranger they actually had a longer drive, according to Hicks.

For the voters that live in the Talking Rock area, they will be going to the Oakman voting precinct, Oakman Community Center, and the drive for those voters should be about the same distance they drove to Ranger.

The voters that live within the City of Ranger, Hicks said, will have to drive 4-½ miles to the Fairmount voting precinct, Fairmount Community Center.

Overall, in Ranger there are 567 active voters, which means the person has voted at least once in the last four years.
