Bibb County school board members took major changes to four schools off the table Thursday night, and they gave tentative approval to a budget that keeps taxes stable but slashes staffing across the district.
Interim Superintendent Steve Smith said he may be able to recommend more cuts throughout the year. Tentative approval of the school board’s spending plan passed 6-1, with Jason Downey opposed and board President Wanda West absent.
If the latest changes remain in the final budget, which appears likely, Barden Elementary School would remain open while Burghard Elementary School would not absorb the Barden students. Similarly, grade levels would not be shifted between Jones Elementary and King-Danforth Elementary. The Barden/Burghard consolidation was projected to save about $510,000, while the Jones/King-Danforth change was expected to save $345,000.
The move leaves the school system tapping deeper into its financial reserves, bringing them to just below $13 million by the end of next year, projections show. That’s more than $600,000 below the school system’s standards for its financial reserves.
