Augusta YDC among nation’s worst for sex assaults | The Augusta Chronicle

The Augusta Youth Development Center was one of four Georgia youth lockups with the most instances of inmates being victimized sexually, according to a federal report released Thursday.

The report surveyed inmates at 273 state-owned or -operated juvenile facilities and 53 locally or privately operated facilities that held adjudicated youth under state contract.

The survey conducted from February to September 2012 concluded that an estimated 9.5 percent of adjudicated youth reported experiencing one or more incidents of sexual victimization by another youth or staff in the past 12 months. That a drop from the 12.6 percent in a 2008-09 and the 9.9 percent in 2012.

Thirteen facilities were identified as high-rated. In each facility the rate was at least 35 percent higher than the national average. Four states — Georgia, Illinois, Ohio and South Carolina — had high rates of at least 35 percent higher than the national average.

Georgia’s Paulding Regional Detention Center was one of the two highest rated facilities for sexual victimization.
