Chattahoochee Circuit Chief Superior Court Judge John Allen is stepping down from the state Judicial Qualifications Commission as he prepares to retire from the superior court bench, JQC Chairman Robert Ingram said today.

The Supreme Court of Georgia—which has constitutional authority to appoint two judges to the seven-member JQC—has named Fulton County State Court Judge Patsy Porter to fill out the remaining 14 months of Allen’s term, Ingram said. The Supreme Court issued the order naming Porter to the JQC on Monday.

“I think it’s a good idea to give the state court judges a voice and a presence on the commission,” Ingram said. “The superior court judges will continue to have a voice and input … through [Appalachian Circuit Chief Superior Court] Judge Brenda Weaver, who is a relatively new member. Ingram said Porter will be sworn in as a commissioner at the JQC’s September meeting.

Allen, who was appointed to the commission in 2006, stepped down as the JQC’s longtime chairman earlier this summer. Last week, at the commission’s monthly meeting, he submitted his resignation in preparation for his retirement, Ingram said.
