At ‘kickoff’ of political season, a taste of things to come | Political Insider | www.ajc.com

ROME _ Barbecued pork was on the menu at Floyd County’s GOP gathering Saturday, but red meat was the main course. Republican politicians produced dollops of it at the event that Rep. Tom Graves called “the kickoff of the political season.”

(We didn’t know it ever ended.)

This meeting was the first gathering of the brunt of Georgia’s all-Republican statewide officers and the seven GOP candidates running for next year’s open Senate seat. Not only did it let the politicians gauge each other’s temperatures, but it provided a friendly venue for the pols to present an unvarnished message of how they intend to lead.

It hinted at some early divides between the seven Senate rivals, plus one of the first glimpses of businessman David Perdue in action. And we heard from lesser-known contenders Eugene Yu and Derrick Grayson.

(There was also a straw poll, which cost a $1 a vote, which Gingrey won with 34 percent. But it should be noted that Yu earned the loudest applause).
