Albany city officials to host mental health forum Tuesday | Albany Herald

ALBANY — The closure of state hospitals in Georgia and the impact it’s anticipated to have is expected to be the focus of discussion at a forum concerning mental health issues on Tuesday.

The forum will begin at 3 p.m. at Phoebe Putney East Convenient Care located at 2410 Sylvester Road. The guest speaker will be Frank Berry, commissioner of the Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities. The event is expected to last roughly 90 minutes.

Wes Smith, assistant city manager for the city of Albany, said planning came about for the forum after it became evident following a retreat attended by city commissioners and state delegates that communication was needed between state officials and the Southwest Georgia public.

“(It was determined that) we need to lobby not just with elected officials, but we need to communicate with officials on the state level,” he said.
