Adoptable Georgia Dogs for September 17, 2013

The Douglas County Sentinel brings us news that their local animal control is short-staffed and overwhelmed by the number of animals in its care and is pleading for help to gets as many of the dogs and cats into new homes.

The Douglas County Animal Shelter is bursting at the seams with animals, a problem exacerbated when about 80 cats were taken in last month as a result of a hoarding situation.

Douglas County Purchasing and Animal Control Director Bill Peacock readily acknowledges the shelter has around 240 animals, about twice its capacity, and that it is grossly understaffed.

And Peacock said there’s simply no more room if the county had to deal with another big group of animals coming in at one time.

“If that happens, we’re going to have to send them somewhere else because there is no way that Douglas County could take another large influx of animals, whether dogs or cats” Peacock said. “We are so above capacity that we would not be able to handle it. We just could not do it. We would have to go to a Plan D.”

Goldie is a gorgeous white German Shephed mix who is very urgent and the volunteers say she’s a total sweetheart – unless an adopter or foster home is found by 10 AM, she will be euthanized at the Douglas County Animal Shelter. Ritchie is one of at least three puppies who came in to Douglas County Animal Shelter.

Luka is listed as a Lab mix, but looks more like a Flat-Coated Retriver; he’s urgent at Douglas County Animal Shelter and ready for an adoptive or foster home.

Also currently swamped is Barrow County Animal Shelter, which has a number of dogs listed for euthanasia on Wednesday – without a foster or adoptive home they will die tomorrow.

Bouncer Bouncer is a big guy, but described as “a lover not a fighter” and is good with children.
