Adoptable Georgia Dogs for May 28, 2013

Charlie, approximately 11 months old, was found wandering loose and eventually made his way to the Atlanta Underdog Initiative, where he is available for adoption. He’s said to be friendly, cuddly, and apparently house-trained.

Atlanta Underdog Initiative specializes in the fostering and placement of Pit Bulls, with a side of breed education. Charlie here doesn’t look like a pittie, but if you’re interested in the breed, there’s no better source of information than the numerous breed-specific organizations that specialize in pibble and pibble-mixes.

Whether it’s a left-wing conspiracy or not, the media may play a role in unfavorable perceptions of the breed: there’s an interesting graphic at Atlanta Underdog’s Breed Information page, illustrating how a single pit bull-related incident generated 230 newspaper articles and coverage by CNN, MSNBC, and FOX, while similar incidents involving mixed-breed dogs or even a Labrador Retriever, led to single isolated stories. With dog breeds, as with politics, the media forms much of our perception and knowing this is the first step in freeing your mind.

We occasionally get requests for specific breeds of dogs, and Jack Russell Terriers are popular among readers. This little guy weighs about 11 pounds and is approximately 2 years old; he’s available for adoption from the Barrow County Animal Shelter, where he is listed as urgent.

This female English Bulldog was found stray and is now listed as urgent by the Gwinnett County Animal Shelter, where the summer has brought large numbers of dogs in, creating an urgent situation for many of them. There is no excuse for letting a bulldog be euthanized in the state of Georgia through neglect.

This poor baby has been wearing the Cone of Shame in the Gwinnett County Animal Shelter and he’s on borrowed time, seriously, because his pod is full and that means dogs will be euthanized very soon. He should have the cone off by now, and deserves to know what it’s like to run through the park with a family rather than letting these be his last memories.

The shelter can’t seem to decide whether he’s a Lab or a Hound dog, but I’d say he looks to me like one of the bird dog breeds.

Olive is a Hound dog puppy who is in the care of BARC Humane Society in Valdosta, Ga; she’s about seven weeks old.

If you’re a South Georgia Republican Leader Dachshund enthusiast with a collection of three or four dachshunds, how much more can another add? This one is in the Lowndes County Animal Shelter.

The Gwinnett County Animal Shelter is collecting food and supplies to send to Moore, Oklahoma, where the local animal shelters are dealing with the influx brought on by the devastating tornado.

“What would I do with my dogs or cats? I’d be devastated if they didn’t have some help as well,” said Liz Dorsey, who donated food after several animal rescue groups put a call out on Facebook. “In helping the dogs, you help the people,”Dorsey said.

The Gwinnett County Animal Shelter said the shelter in the city of Moore is overflowing with displaced pets and their food supply is limited.

“The response has been absolutely unbelievable, as you can tell,” said shelter director Chip Moore.

He said he never expected such a large turnout when the pet food drive began Friday.

“I know how quickly something like that can happen and it’s so devastating. Didn’t matter if it was in Moore, Okla., or if it was in Buford, Ga.,” said Lt. Christina Schiralli of the Gwinnett County Police Department.

The donation drive runs through Tuesday at 4 p.m.

A Georgia-based company will load all the donated food onto a tractor-trailer on Wednesday and drive it straight through to Moore.
