Adoptable Georgia Dogs for July 31, 2013

Mrs. GaPundit decided that if the City of LaGrange, Ga Animal Shelter doesn’t give these dogs names, she will.

She christened this one “Funky-looking dog Emmett,” and he is in Kennel 41-44951 and is thought to be a Beagle/Cattle Dog mix.

She named the next dog, a female Border Collie, “Renata”.

The female yellow Lab mix female is named Lula in honor of the North Georgia town. True story: we name our dogs after places in Georgia. Dolly the Coonhound/Vizsla mix is formally named “Dahlonega”.

Finally, this one she named “Jasper” in honor of the recently deceased father of a friend of hers. “Mr. Davis was hilarious, and this dog looks like he has a sense of humor. Jasper also is called Ridley, and is a male cocker spaniel. We used to have a Golden Retriever named Jasper, after the same fellow and the Georgia city.

Yesterday, I discussed a small, rural volunteer organization that is struggling to raise money and save dogs: I donated online and you can too. If everyone who reads this email today donates $1, we’ll save 15 dogs today; a five dollar donation goes far with all-volunteer groups.

Today, a rescue group on the other end of the spectrum: Angels Among Us Rescue is a large, Metro Atlanta organization with a professional-level of management and serious resources in terms of human volunteers and funding. They do great work.

This weekend a group of volunteers learned about two puppies who had been dumped along a rural road. Here’s the story of Noche.

After catching him, they took Noche immediately to the vet, where he’s being treated for fleas, worms, cuts and wounds on his skin.

Another small dog was out in the woods with Noche, and when the volunteers couldn’t catch him, they set humane traps. Someone then stole the traps and they’re still trying to save the small terrier. Noche is doing better, loves people and other dogs and is playful. He’s still emaciated and will need a foster who can help him gain weight and get to his vet appointments.

The ASPCA held an adoption day on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC yesterday.

An ASPCA spokeswoman said previous adoption outreach efforts on the Hill — the inaugural “Paws” gathering in 2012 and a Valentine’s-themed version earlier this year — have resulted in almost two dozen adoptions by staffers.

Barry Londeree, animal welfare legislative assistant to Rep. James P. Moran, D-Va. — who, as co-chairman of the Congressional Animal Protection Caucus has helped organize the various “Paws” shindigs — met his new bestie, Bunker, toward the end of last summer’s meet-and-greet. The dog now has the run of Moran’s office — a duty that evidently entails policing the area for stray foodstuffs and checking the softness of the carpet.
