File this one under unconfirmed rumors that I’m probably just making up anyway.
I’m hearing that retired Glynn County Sheriff Wayne V. Bennett, a Republican, is being urged by community leaders to run for the State House of Representatives seat currently held by Jeff Chapman, who announced he will run for Congress.
Wayne Bennett was last elected to his fifth term as Glynn County Sheriff in 2008, and in 2011 announced he would not be running for reelection.
In the 2012 Republican Primary Election, Glynn County cast nearly 66% of votes, followed by McIntosh with 30% and Long with just under 4%. That would make a strong contender from Glynn County a favorite.
The other Republican candidate in 2012, John Tuten, took 47.4% against Chapman, losing by 330 votes out of a total 6491 ballots cast. If he were ready, willing, and able to make a run once Chapman’s seat is up for election, he could make a real race of it.
