Construction contractors and elected Republican officials have taken a significant interest in the Savannah-Chatham public school board election — or at least in one candidate.
The most recent campaign contribution reports indicate David Simons has raised $50,616 to fund his bid for school board president. That’s three times more than the combined total raised by his four opponents.
The bulk of Simons’ money came from school construction and supply contractors and Republican elected officials who have hired him as a consultant or fundraiser over the years.
When Simons was asked during a school board debate before the Junior League whether accepting the contributions might be a conflict of interest, he took offense.
“I find that to be inappropriate and offensive,” he said. “I’m a businessman. I make money, and I’m not apologetic.”
