Cherokee Tribune – Poll workers ready for primary election

CANTON —With just seven regular employees and 42 polling precincts, Cherokee County elections supervisor Janet Munda says her office simply couldn’t pull off an election if it weren’t for the many residents who are willing to help.

About 40 of the county’s newest poll workers gathered Thursday for a three-hour class to learn the skills they’ll need to do their part in the May 20 primary.

The fresh faces at the Cherokee County Conference Center at The Bluffs were soon to join the ranks of some 350 poll workers the county will have on May 20, workers who Munda described as critical to the election process.

“They are the face of the election,” the supervisor said. “People don’t know how it gets to the point where it is. They don’t know about our office. They just know those sweet people working at the polling place are the ones who are responsible for them being able to vote.”

The new poll workers earned $20 each for their three hours Thursday and could look forward to another $120 for working on Election Day. But Munda said it’s definitely not about the money.
