More than 1,780 Chatham County residents have received enrollment assistance for health insurance under the federal Affordable Care Act.

That latest figure from the county’s two federally qualified heath centers includes the month of January, according to the Chatham County Safety Net Planning Council.

In November, the council reported that only about 1,000 residents had made inquiries about coverage and that around 380 submissions had been made through the embattled website, HealthCare.gov.

Since October, the number of residents who have received enrollment help, via phone, paper and online, totals 1,784. Outreach and education has been provided to 1,558 people, according to the council, a county-wide group that works to increase access to health services.

Officials were unable to project how many have completed enrollment. Additionally, the data does not include those who have signed up for coverage on their own.

“I think we’ve seen improvements considering conflicting stories and so forth from the beginning,” Executive Director Dale Carlson-Bebout said of the numbers. “We know that there’s been some growth in those numbers since the October timeframe…”
