School board candidates battling for runoff votes – Times-Georgian: News

Both candidates in the Carrollton Board of Education Ward 2 runoff are keeping busy, making phone calls and going door-to-door, hoping to get voters to the polls for a contest that traditionally has very low participation.

And the Dec. 3 runoff follows the Nov. 5 election that had a very light turnout. Wednesday was the first day of early voting and only six voters had cast ballots by day’s end.

April Brewer Harris, 33, owner of the Squire Shop clothing store, ran her Nov. 5 campaign on a platform of extensive experience in civic activities.

“I feel I can be a good liaison between the board and community,” she said Wednesday. “I want to be an advocate for all students and I can look at all schools equally.”

Harris, who has no children in school, is countering a campaign by her opponent, Katie Doyle Williams, 38, owner of a Carrollton fitness gymnasium, ReeseFit, who is emphasizing her years of volunteer service in the Carrollton schools.

“I’m a stakeholder in the school system and have children in the system,” Williams said. She is the mother of two Carrollton Elementary School students.

Harris has gained the unofficial endorsement of current Ward 2 board member Joe McGinnis, who chose not to seek re-election after serving three terms.
