Mallory Jones and Beverly Olson will face each other again in a District 4 runoff election next month.
Final, unofficial tallies late Tuesday showed Jones with 2,199 votes, Olson with 1,440 and Theron Ussery with 1,024.
Since one candidate did not draw a majority of the votes cast, a runoff will be held Oct. 15.
“I feel good,” Jones said after the results were counted. “I was hoping to win this thing without a runoff, but I’m glad to be in the No. 1 position.”
Jones, 66, is a Realtor who ran unsuccessfully for the Bibb County Commission District 3 seat last year, losing by fewer than 50 votes. Olson, 62, the only incumbent in the District 4 race, has served on Macon City Council since 2011, taking Eric Erikson’s seat after he resigned. Ussery, 69, was a member of the oversight committee for the special purpose local option sales tax and a member of Macon City Council from 1976 to 1995.
“It’s an exciting time for this city, and we need to turn it around,” Jones said during an election night party at his real estate office.
