Adoptable Georgia dogs for September 12, 2013

From Examiner.com, we learn about Ruger, a beautiful five-year old male German Shepherd who is dying of heartbreak in the Fulton County Animal Shelter. From a volunteer:

He is very people friendly and dog friendly. I spent quite a bit of time with him last night in his kennel. He was bewildered but he seems like a low-key boy.

When I visited him tonight, I can see that depression has kicked in. According to the kennel staff, he’s not eating and he is laying with his back against the kennel gate.

When I went in the kennel to see him, he didn’t get up.

While Ruger is marked as “rescue only” because of some medical conditions, if you’re interested in helping this poor guy out, the best thing to do is volunteer with a rescue group to “foster to adopt.” That way the rescue can go ahead and pull him from the shelter and get him to the vet before he comes to your home. Nurse him back to health and restore his confidence in humanity, and you’ll have first shot at making him a permanent family member. Last month, we featured Madison, then a sick Chocolate Lab and one of our readers helped by giving her a ride from Valdosta, where she was in the Lowndes County Animal Shelter, to Lawrenceville, where she now lives a a foster dog. This is what she looked like then:

Quite a beauty, right? Even if you can’t adopt or foster, you might be able to help save a dog’s life by simply giving them a ride from a shelter to a rescue group.

Moxie, below, is a 13-year old Lab who is one of only twelve surviving rescue dogs who worked the 9/11 wreckage.

With her handler, Moxie worked the wreckage for eight days after the attack.
