ATLANTA – The loss of certified technicians at a UGA laboratory could raise legal issues for companies that rely on the lab for environmental tests.

University of Georgia officials say two certified technicians left its Agricultural and Environmental Services Laboratories by June, but workers kept processing samples.

That may pose problems, for example, with businesses authorized to discharge into waterways. Those firms are generally required to send water samples to a qualified lab for testing, and some use UGA’s facility.

By law, those tests must be run by technicians with state-issued certifications.
