Many of Middle Georgia’s most troubled schools made strong progress in the last year, test scores released Tuesday suggest.

A Telegraph analysis shows that midstate schools generally had passing rates above 80 percent on the state’s Criterion-Referenced Competency Test, and some schools posted nearly perfect rates of students passing the tests.

Though some of the most troubled schools lost even more ground, schools that had low passing rates generally posted strong gains from last year’s results.

Among those low-scoring schools were Bibb County’s Bruce, Burghard and Hartley elementary schools, which each added about 11 percentage points to their passing rates, The Telegraph’s analysis shows.

The biggest drops came at Houston County’s Pearl Stephens Elementary School and Bibb County’s Jones Elementary School, where scores dropped nearly 6 percentage points.

The highest passing rate overall was at Bibb County’s Alexander II Magnet School, where 97.3 percent of students met or exceeded the state’s standards on the test. Houston’s Bonaire, Quail Run, Lake Joy and Eagle Springs elementaries, along with Houston’s Mossy Creek Middle School and Bibb County’s Springdale Elementary, all posted passing scores of at least 95 percent.
