Gingrey: Senate immigration bill is a mistake

In a 68-32 vote, the Senate today passed an immigration bill, S. 744, which dramatically alters current immigration law. Rep. Phil Gingrey, M.D., opposes the legislation, which provides amnesty for 11 million illegal aliens, weakens current enforcement laws, and is full of special interest provisions.

“I don’t want to see another Obamacare. We are already experiencing what happens when Congress passes a massive bill without knowing what’s in it, and today the Senate repeated that mistake,” Gingrey said. “Illegal immigration is one of the most pressing issues facing our nation, but amnesty is not the solution. The Senate bill legalizes millions who have ‘jumped the line,’ cedes border enforcement to unaccountable bureaucrats, and does nothing to stem the tide of illegal immigration.”

Securing the border is one of Gingrey’s top priorities and he recently introduced the strongest border security bill in Congress. The “Support More Assets, Resources and Technology on the Border Act” (SMART Border Act), H.R. 2220, outlines a robust border protection strategy and measures to help achieve operational control of the U.S.’s southern border.
