U.S. Sen. Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., is reaching across the aisle to a Democratic colleague to form a coalition aimed at supporting communities with military bases.
Isakson and North Dakota Sen. Heidi Heitkamp will lead the Senate Defense Communities Caucus, which will work on issues of interest to base communities throughout the country.
“Georgia is home to several military installations with active community supporters who provide the support and stability that our men and women in uniform require,” Isakson said in a prepared statement.
“It is critically important that we understand the issues these communities face and play an active role in empowering and supporting them.”
Georgia lost four of its military bases to the last round of base closings approved by Congress in 2005, including three in metro Atlanta, and another round of closings could hit during the next several years.
