After being blasted by parents, teachers and even students Thursday night, Bibb County Board of Education members agreed to reconsider some proposed staffing cuts.

Most of the public speakers focused on the proposal to cut 18 school counselors to save about $1.6 million. That would leave a part-time counselor in schools of nearly 700 students, compared to a state recommendation for one full-time counselor for each 450 students.

To save more money, the school board voted unanimously to a full staff furlough day in just two and a half weeks, leaving more money for next year’s expenses.

The school system’s latest proposal would cut 125 positions, helping save about $10.6 million in ongoing expenses while leaving a $8.1 million structural deficit for next year.
