US (GA): Cool spring delays peach harvest

Cool spring weather this year has pushed back the start of the Georgia peach season. Though the cool weather will delay the start of the season, volumes will not be affected.

“Our normal start date is right around Mother’s Day,” said Will McGehee, marketing director for the Georgia Peach Council. “We’ll start shipping significant volumes the week of May 20, so we’re running about 10 days behind.”

He noted that the late start will just mean that the entire season will be pushed back, so the season will also end about 10 days later than usual, in August. The delay is due to cool spring weather that, although will not adversely affect this year’s crop, might actually benefit the quality of fruit.
