A proposed demonstration project 200 miles south of Atlanta could lead to a new water supply for the drought-prone metro region.
The state is planning to spend $5.1 million to test the economic and environmental viability of aquifer storage and recovery (ASR) in a project that calls for withdrawing water from the shallow Floridan aquifer and storing it inside deeper aquifers for use during dry times.
While the immediate benefit would be increasing stream flow in the lower Flint River, the grant application submitted by the Southwest Georgia Regional Commission ultimately envisions pumping an additional 250 million gallons of water a day (mgd) into the Flint and Chattahoochee rivers downstream of Atlanta in exchange for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers allocating an equal amount of water from Lake Lanier.
