Vice President Joe Biden Will Join Reed, Deal For Port of Savannah Visit

Vice President Joe Biden will join Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed and Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal as he visits the Port of Savannah on Monday.

During the visit, the Vice President will discuss the importance of infrastructure investment to exports, economic competitiveness and job creation. The Port of Savannah is the East Coast’s busiest port for containerized exports, according to a release from the mayor’s office.

Monday’s visit follows Biden’s visit to the Port of Baltimore on Monday, Sept. 9, where he highlighted a $10 million TIGER grant that will help improve the port’s productivity by widening a channel into the port while increasing the port’s cargo storage capacity and avoiding the need for costly repairs. The Vice President will also visit the Port of Charleston, in South Carolina, on Monday.

Atlanta is set to receive its own TIGER V grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation for the development of the city’s Atlanta BeltLine. The Transportation Department earmarked $18 million for the development of a 2.5-mile portion of the BeltLine in the southwest corridor, Reed announced on Sept. 3.

The two U.S. ports are preparing to accommodate some of the increased freight volumes projected to move through the Panama Canal, where a major expansion project will be completed in 2015, according to the White House.
