Sen. Don Balfour has even more competition to continue as one of Gwinnett’s longest-serving legislators.

On Friday, former Commissioner Mike Beaudreau announced a race for Balfour’s District 9 seat, which the Snellville man returned to after successfully fighting off criminal charges involving state per diem payments.

Beaudreau served on the Gwinnett Board of Commissioners from 2005 through 2012.

“I am honored to have the opportunity to represent my community in the Georgia State Senate,” Beaudreau said in a press release Friday. “Gwinnett County is where I live, work, coach and worship. Every day, I will work hard to be the senator that Senate District 9 deserves.”

The businessman who is a running coach in the community is the second to challenge Balfour on Republican ballots. Former Lawrenceville Councilman P.K. Martin began mounting a campaign last year.

A candidate qualifying period set for early March will determine the May primay ballot.
