Gabby Giffords to speak at Columbus forum – Atlanta Business Chronicle

In 2006, when Jim Blanchard retired as chairman and CEO of Synovus Financial Corp., the Columbus, Ga.-based financial services company, he quickly acted on an idea that had been percolating for some time in his mind. The manifestation of that idea is the Jim Blanchard Leadership Forum, which is hosted annually by the Leadership Institute at Cunningham Center under the auspices of Columbus State University.

Previous forums have hosted former President George W. Bush, Secretaries of State Condoleezza Rice and Colin Powell, Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, Gen. David Petraeus, former Speaker of the U.S. House and presidential candidate Newt Gingrich, editorial columnist Thomas Friedman, and married political strategists James Carville and Mary Matalin.

The 2013 edition of the Jim Blanchard Leadership Forum marks an effort by organizers to shift from the political toward a more business-oriented theme, said Ed Helton, interim executive director of the Columbus State University Cunningham Center.

The 2013 speakers include David Novak, chairman and CEO of Yum! Brands Inc.; John Stankey, group president and chief strategy officer, AT&T Inc.; Alan Mulally, president and CEO, Ford Motor Co.; Maj. Gen. H.R. McMaster, commanding general of the U.S. Army Maneuver Center of Excellence; Tom Mullins, former football coach and founder of the Christ Fellowship Church in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; Capt. Mark Kelly, commander of the Space Shuttle Endeavour; and Gabrielle Giffords, former U.S. representative from Arizona, author and Kelly’s wife; and marketing guru Seth Godin.
