City officials will have the opportunity to hear directly from candidates seeking to replace Saxby Chambliss in the U.S. Senate during GMA’s 2014 Mayors’ Day. Since Chambliss has decided not to seek reelection a number of individuals have already announced their intention to run for the seat. On Monday, Jan. 27, 2014, GMA will hold a U.S. Senate Candidates Forum. Candidates from both the Republican and Democratic parties will be invited to share their views on issues of concern to city officials and discuss their vision for governing in Washington, D.C.
“GMA is excited to have those seeking to represent our state in the U.S. Senate come before our membership and share their thoughts on governing during Mayors’ Day,” said GMA Executive Director Lamar Norton.
Mayors’ Day will kick off on Friday, Jan. 24 with two afternoon training courses. City officials will have the opportunity to understand their obligations under the federal Fair Housing Act, especially in light of the state of Georgia transitioning many clients with developmental disabilities from state hospitals to community-based settings. The transition has resulted in an increasing number of alleged violations to the act and this course aims to help city officials limit the potential liability and exposure to claims of non-compliance and hear about the economic benefits that group homes can bring to a community.
“GMA wants city officials to be prepared for the transition and act in a proactive manner that complies with the Fair Housing Act,” said Norton.
Friday will also see the offering of a new training course: Public Policy Development and Implementation, which is designed to give municipal officials an understanding of the importance of developing policy.
Training will continue on Saturday with 14 course offerings, and the GMA Board of Directors will hold an open meeting Saturday afternoon.
City officials should also note there will be district caucus breakfast meetings on Sunday morning from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m., a change in date and time from previous Mayors’ Day conferences.
On Sunday at 9:15 a.m., newly elected officials and first-time Mayors’ Day attendees are invited to attend an orientation meeting to learn more about GMA and how they can get involved in the association. Also beginning at 9:15 a.m., delegates are encouraged to attend one of three concurrent sessions; one provides an overview of the recent pilot downtown programs that help city officials create a downtown vision; another offers a close look at formal programs that help cities serve as technology incubators and develop locally owned small businesses; and a third will provide specific dollar and cents evidence that education is vitally important to a community’s prosperity.
Community Development, Municipal Government and Transportation Policy Committee meetings are scheduled from 10:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Training certificates will be awarded and Cities of Ethics will be recognized at the 12:30 p.m. luncheon. Policy committee meetings begin again at 2:30 p.m., this time with Environment and Natural Resources, Public Safety and Revenue & Finance. The day ends with a Legislative Policy Council and Congressional Action Team meeting.
City officials are encouraged to invite their House and Senate members to the Monday morning Legislative Networking Breakfast, which is scheduled to feature the Governor, Lieutenant Governor and Speaker of the House sharing their perspectives on the 2014 legislative session.
The U.S. Senate Candidates forum will be held at 9:15 a.m., following the breakfast.
At the conclusion of the forum, city officials are encouraged to visit the Georgia State Capitol and/or take his or her legislator to lunch.
